How to Help Your Child with Swimming

All Levels

  1. Ask them to tell you what they learned everyday
  2. Take them to Rec & Family Swim & practice swimming
  3. Practice pool rules
  4. #1 Rule - Never hold your breath

Lavender/Pink

  1. Take them to big pool and practice having them hold onto the wall & being away from you
  2. Allow them to be in the water without a flotation device
  3. Practice gently getting face wet in the tub or shower

Teal/Yellow/Gold

  1. Blow bubbles in the bath or shower
  2. Gently pour water over face and head
  3. Practice kicking in the bath using straight legs and floppy feet (should be very little splash)
  4. Practice putting their whole face in the water and blowing bubbles
  5. Practice pool rules with them

Orange/Bronze/Red/Burgundy

  1. Encourage core strengthening activities
  2. Practice side breathing in the bathtub
  3. Practice breath control in the bath or shower
    1. Example: Breath for 3 sec, 5 sec, 6 sec etc
  4. Practice breathing out through nose

Green/Blue/Purple

  1. Bring to lap swim to increase stamina
  2. Build core strength with core strengthening activities such as yoga

Of course, a private lesson or two never hurt! Make sure you let your instructor know what skills your child needs specific help on.
